05/05/2017: John's new bathroom in Rainham

Our customer John in Rainham wanted his bathroom to be a more relaxing, better appointed place. After all, it is one of the last places on earth where any of us gets some peace and quiet.

Although quite a compact room, by starting with slate grey flooring and white furniture, to go with the full height tiled walls, the room looks and feels spacious. The pale grey wall offsets the white nicely to add a touch of warmth and shade.

John was delighted with the result, especially the easily cleaned, low maintenance surfaces that will keep looking great with just a wipe over.

09/03/2017: Heavy duty work to reduce Bill's bills

Bill, in Romford had an old-fashioned solid fuel boiler for his heating and hot water. With rising fuel costs and the laborious stoking and cleaning regimen that was necessary, Bill decided to opt for the easy life and install a gas boiler.

The original one was so heavy that it took three of us to remove it, but Bill now has a clean, quiet and low maintenance Vaillant gas boiler keeping his house and water nice and warm.

We look forward to keeping Bill's boiler in top condition by carrying out his annual services, which will make sure that the cover of his Vaillant long manufacturers warranty will give him peace of mind too.

02/02/2017: Boiler Service Romford

What our customer said."I chose the company after reading various online reviews. Richard turned up and serviced the boiler, appearing to be thorough and knowledgeable. Based on this visit I have booked him to fit an outside tap as I am confident that he will do a good job."

Our comments
Every job, no matter how simple or small has to be handled with the utmost professionalism. The person who is calling you for a simple service today, may be calling you back for your best job of the month some time in the future. Even your best customer is someone that you didn't know once.

02/02/2017: Heating hadn't been working for 10 years

This is what our customer said. "I chose Divine water because of prior reviews in Which?. The work was to investigate why some radiators were not working and to replace some old radiators, then generally service the central heading and hot water system.

Richard was tenacious in tracking down and fixing the problem. Having installed our new radiators and thoroughly overhauled the entire system, Richard left us with good central heating. Everything works as it should for first time in 10 years. He was very thorough, competent, tidy, nice to have around the house, competitively priced and timely. I thoroughly recommend him.
"

Our thoughts on the job.
This job in Brentwood was certainly something to get my teeth into. As a person who relishes a challenge, I certainly found plenty here to work on. I believe the pipework was blocked 10 years ago when an extension was built. With 20 radiators through the house and the front downstairs radiators being stone cold, a standard power flush was not going to be enough! to clear pipes. After consultation with the family, we broke into the pipe work under floor and rodded to clear the blockage. With the amount of metal in a system this size, there is always a danger of corrosion and contamination recurring. To reduce the chance of future problems and keep the system clean we installed a magnetic filter to the central heating. Jobs that involve a little detective work as well as plumbing skills are a great challenge, giving tremendous job satisfaction when you see the end result of a warm, happy family.

02/02/2017: Boiler Repair Upminster

In our customer's words "My boiler failed on a freezing Sunday - no heat or hot water for 24 hours. Having seen the Which? Trusted Traders logo on their van I telephoned Divine Water at 9.20am and Richard came at 12 noon. Now all is well, and I am so grateful for the courteous and prompt service. Knowing they had your seal of approval was very reassuring, and especially when you are alone and elderly. Full marks!"
Joan, Essex23/01/2017

Our Thoughts on the job.
Being cold is uncomfortable, unpleasant and unhealthy. Being left in the cold for a minute longer than necessary just isn't fair on the customer, so making strenuous efforts to get people warm again is of vital importance. Heating repairs are always given the highest priority in the winter months.

05/01/2017: How to balance a central heating system

If you have problems with one or two radiators not getting hot then it could be that your central heating system needs balancing. Many plumbers will try to sell you power flushing, saying that you have a blocked radiator, this is not normally required. If you have a radiator that is not getting hot, try opening valves at both ends of the radiator and turn off all the other radiators. If it then gets hot, it cannot be blocked and the system probably needs balancing. Why balance a central heating system? If your all your radiator valves are fully open on both sides, the radiators near the boiler will get hot whilst the radiators furthest away from the boiler would be starved of heat. The objective of balancing your radiators is to ensure that all radiators have access to the same amount of heat (hot water) from the boiler.

Your system may become out of balance over time when radiators have been taken off for example: to decorate, when you have added a radiator, or had building work completed adding additional rooms.
When taking off the radiator to decorate the valves would need to be shut off. When putting the radiator back on the valves will often be turned on full which can put the system out of balance.

In practice balancing is the process of turning down the hot radiators (probably those nearest to the boiler) and opening up those furthest away.
Each radiator has two valves, one is the user adjustable valve. Sometimes this is a thermostatic radiator valve (TRV) or it maybe a standard valve. The other valve is the balancing valve, this should have a top that has to be removed to adjust the valve. If both valves are the same then designate one as the user adjustable valve and the other as the balancing valve.

How to balance your system.

  1. Start with the system cold
  2. Turn all radiators on fully at both ends
  3. Turn the heating system on
  4. Now you have to run around the house and identify the radiators that turn on first
  5. Start with 2 or 3 radiators and turn the balancing valve down so that so that they are open at about 1 turn from the off position
  6. If you are quick you may be able to repeat steps 3,4 and 5 without waiting for the system to cool. If not, allow system to cool down and repeat.
  7. You may find that several radiators nearest the boiler are only open an eighth of a turn while others are fully open.
  8. When you have all the radiators coming on together then you can use the user adjustable valves to set the desired temperature on each radiator

04/10/2016: Underfloor heating system in Romford gets modernised

With the winter frosts and winds coming closer every day, a faulty heating system is going to become a problem sooner than you think. Luckily Fiona in Romford who had recently moved into her new home, contacted us to get her old Under Floor Heating system renovated.

The heating system was inconsistent and inefficient. Some rooms would be toasty and warm, and others completely stone cold.

We had a look at the pipes and found that many of the flow regulators on the manifold were stuck and needed replacement. We carried out the repairs and made a substantial improvement to the system. Each room in the house is now individually controllable and will easily heat a room in no time for the cold winter months to come.

22/08/2016: This family in Brentwood increased their hot water supply, saved energy and floor space

This customer in Brentwood, Essex had a fairly inefficient cast iron floor standing boiler. In a family home with three bathrooms, this was proving to be something of a problem for them. The volume of water and the pressure were both inadequate for the needs at peak times.

The solution was to fit a new, high-efficiency Vaillant boiler and an un-vented cylinder. Not only did this produce more than enough hot water at high pressure to satisfy the needs of their 3 bathrooms, but also saved some valuable floor space.

Another happy customer in Brentwood is now saving energy, while getting a better result than that provided by their prev ious boiler and hot water tank,

06/07/2016: You don't need a gas engineer to check your toilet - or do you?

We were recently called out to Elaine's house to repair a leaking toilet. Straightforward enough and a nice simple job, which was accomplished in a very short time.

While there, Elaine asked me to take a look at her oven as it wouldn't light on the piezo spark, but had to be lit manually. On opening the door, tell-tale traces of soot indicated that the device may have been producing carbon monoxide. On testing this, I stopped the CO meter at a reading of 91 parts per million and ventilated the area. The maximum permissible CO emission is 30 ppm, and a reading of 91 is certainly high enough to present a threat to health.

Elaine agreed to have the oven disconnected from the gas supply to avoid any further danger. As a Gas Safe Approved Engineer, I was able to do that for her on the same visit, saving time, money and inconvenience.

31/05/2016: Regular boiler servicing helps prevent problems from developing

When discovered at an early stage, problems with boilers can very often be quickly, easily and cheaply repaired. If left to develop, they can become costly, dangerous and highly inconvenient. Rather than leaving it until the need is greatest, in the winter, having your boiler serviced in the summer can minimise all these adverse factors.

Take this Potterton Performa boiler. It had a small leak coming from the flow sensor, which we discovered during its recent service. The sensor was replaced and the water is now coming out of the boiler at the right temperature and at the right time again. Because the customer booked their service in the summer, when the boiler is less intensely used, they suffered minimum inconvenience too. Call us now or click in the header of any page to email us and get your boiler service booked in time to make hay while the sun shines.

03/05/2016: Same day repairs to Potterton Performa boiler

With the lingering cold weather that seems so reluctant to go away, having a boiler failure can be little short of a disaster.

Just such a disaster befell Deborah from Upminster who phoned us the other morning to say that her Potterton Performa combi boiler was not working. Being close to home, we were able to get round to her house quickly, and diagnosed the problem as a failed PCB, which we replaced that afternoon, getting her boiler and heating system back up and running in the shortest possible time.

12/04/2016: Cleanliness is important, especially for heat exchangers

Carmel from Rainham called us about her Worcester Bosch boiler as it was not working efficiently and needed a service. On inspection, the heat exchanger was found to be seriously clogged with dirt. After a thorough clean and a check of the boiler connections, controls and flues, the system is now running efficiently again, providing warmth and hot water with the minimum possible use of gas.

01/03/2016: Short notice repair of Vaillant boiler in Hornchurch

Lee and June from Hornchurch needed a repair to their Vaillant Ecotec boiler. It was leaking water and showed error E75 (water pressure low).

On inspection, it was discovered that the leak was caused by the diverter valve. The water pressure issue required the expansion vessel to be replaced.
We arrived at 3pm on Friday and finished the repairs by 5pm. The heating was back on, keeping our customer warm and happy.

26/02/2016: Trust the professionals and feel free to get on with your own life

Tony from Romford wanted a new boiler. He also wanted to spend time at work so needed someone he could rely on to do the job without mess, fuss or supervision.

Divine Water gave a written quote, which Tony accepted once the best boiler for the job had been selected. Installation started on the 24th february and work was completed on the 26th. In all our jobs 'completed' means that the job has been carried out, tested and the working area restored to the tidy state it was in before we arrived.

Tony's new boiler has been registered with Gas Safe and Vaillant to give Tony and his family the peace of mind that comes from their 10 year guarantee.

Whilst we were left to install the boiler Tony was able to go to work building an extension for one of his customers. Another happy customer.

23/10/2015: Central heating servicing Carbon monoxide.

This week we were called to fix a central heating system in Gidea park. The pump was not working so we replace this and the system fired up. However on completing some basic checks we found that the boiler was producing very high levels of carbon monoxide over 1500 parts per million. Even relatively short exposure at these levels can result in death. We serviced the boiler, cleaned heat exchanger and adjusted gas rate but were unable to reduce the co output to acceptable levels. We had to isolate the gas supply to the boiler so that it could not be used. We have quote to install a new boiler to the home in Gidea park and will start installation on Tuesday.

26/08/2015: Important information on boiler services

A recent Which? report on boiler safety uncovered some of the dangerous mistakes made by engineers during boiler services. Faulty boilers can be incredibly dangerous, so it is essential that services are carried out properly. The report found that eight out of ten engineers did not complete minimum checks, including removing the boiler cover.

The good news is, you can ensure that your boiler is serviced properly using the following methods. Making sure the engineer is Gas Safe approved is a good first step. You can also follow the steps on this free boiler safety checklist from the link below. which.co.uk/documents/pdf/boiler-servicing-checklist-pdf-412872.pdf

The report also found that nine out of ten people would save money by paying for services and repairs as they happen, rather than taking out a boiler servicing contract. The average price for one boiler service is £70. To view the full Which? report, click the link below. which.co.uk/home-and-garden/heating-water-and-electricity/guides/best-boiler-cover-brands/getting-the-best-boiler-service/

01/04/2015: Worcester Bosch Green Star Repair

Today we fixed a very problematic Worcester Bosch boiler, the customer had had two other engineers out but both had failed to effect a fix. The boiler was going int lockout after about 4 minutes of running a bath or having a shower (not good news if you were in the middle of washing your hair. After consultation with the manual and technical support we diagnosed the issue to the main heat exchanger. Now the boiler is working reliably again.

This is what out customer said:
"Engineer on inspection diagnosed problem quickly. Worked with due care and attention to the work. I asked questions and was able to clear up any doubts. I was pleased with work carried out. Would use again."

    31/03/2015: Poor installation standards

We were called out today to investigate a leak coming from a Vaillant boiler. We discovered that the condense pipe was installed in copper pipe rather that plastic. The boiler had been installed for about 5 years by a friend of the home owner. The condense pipe is designed to carry away acidic condensate waste water from the flue system to a drain. The installer had used copper instead of plastic pipe and over the 5 year period the copper pipe had corroded through. See picture. The dripping condensate missed the gas pipe by about 5cm. This could have been very dangerous.

14/02/2015: GAS SAFE NEWS: Widespread ignorance among Brits of the 'silent killer in your home'

New research reveals Brits don't understand symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning

    Gas Safe Register advises:

    • Always use a Gas Safe registered engineer to fix, fit and service gas appliances
    • Make sure gas appliances have a safety check every year and a regular service
    • Find a registered engineer at www.GasSafeRegister.co.uk or call 0800 408 5500
    • Always ask to see the engineer's Gas safe ID card
    • You can't see of smell CO but it can kill quickly without warning
    • Recognise the symptoms of CO poisoning – headaches, dizziness, nausea, breathlessness, collapse and loss of consciousness.

A funny taste in your mouth, diarrhoea and difficulty sleeping are just some of the symptoms that Brits are wrongly associating with carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning.

New research, launched today by Gas Safe Register to mark Gas Safety Week (10-16 September), has revealed widespread confusion about what the key symptoms are of this potentially fatal gas, which is known as the silent killer.

Despite carbon monoxide being a tasteless, odourless and colourless gas, over half of those questioned thought that a funny taste in the mouth indicated CO poisoning, while a third thought a cough and 29 per cent thought a sore throat.

Dr Peter Karpati, of the London Hyperbaric Chamber, a specialist facility which uses oxygen therapy to treat CO poisoning said,

"This evidence clearly shows that the symptoms of CO poisoning are easily confused with less serious conditions, which is concerning as it can kill people quickly. It is vital that the public are aware of the symptoms as a quick diagnosis and treatment greatly improves the chances of recovery. The key symptoms to be aware of are headaches, dizziness, nausea, breathlessness, collapse and loss of consciousness. If you are in doubt then see a doctor immediately.”
Other symptoms wrongly associated with CO poisoning include the chills (12.5%), diarrhoea (9.5%), difficulty sleeping (23.2%), ear-ache (8.4%), loss of appetite (27%), a rash (15%), a runny or blocked nose (14.2%) and stomach cramps (16.2%).

Department of Health research showed that around 4,000 people will present themselves at hospital with CO symptoms in a twelve month period. In the last year, there have been more than 50 deaths as a result of CO poisoning. Now, homeowners are being urged to learn the symptoms and cut the risk by getting their gas appliances safety checked annually and serviced regularly by a Gas Safe registered engineer.

Low-level CO poisoning can occur when small amounts of CO gradually escape from faulty gas appliances, such as boilers, gas cookers or gas fires, into the air. Despite the dangers posed by CO poisoning, Gas Safe Register has found that 43 per cent of people do not get their appliances checked regularly and 1 in 10 have never had their appliances checked.

Paul Johnston, chief executive of Gas Safe Register said,

"An annual gas safety check should be a top priority for every homeowner and landlords are legally obliged to provide all tenants with a copy of a current Gas Safety Record. Carbon monoxide alarms are readily available on the high street and can be potentially life saving by informing you if high levels of the silent killer is in your home."

Gas Safe Register has launched Gas Safety Week to raise awareness of gas safety issues and carbon monoxide poisoning, for more information see The Gas Safety Register Website.

12/02/2015: How to Save Money, Advice from the Energy Saving Trust

So the sun is shining today! This rare event shouldn't be allowed to take our minds off the need to save energy and money when winter makes its unwelcome return. Whether you rely on mains gas, bottled gas, oil or electricity for your heating and hot water, there is a wealth of good advice from the Energy Saving Trust that can help save you a worthwhile amount of the money you spend on your energy. This is what Divine Water and the Energy Saving recommend below.

Five Ways to save on your heating bills.

With energy bills rising year on year above the rate of inflation it has never been more important to try and save on the amount of gas you use.........
Typical household energy bills for the whole year are commonly now £1500 or more.

    1. Fitting a new condensing boiler
    2. Fitting thermostatic radiator valves (TRVs) to the radiators.
    3. Fitting new controls, programmer, room and hot water cylinder thermostats.
    4. Fit a hot water cylinder jacket.
    5. Turn down the thermostat by 1o C and save about 7%

    Thermostats and controls
The right heating controls will let you keep your home at a comfortable temperature without wasting fuel or heat – so you'll reduce your carbon dioxide emissions and spend less on heating bills.
If you have an electric storage heating and hot water system, with storage heaters use the off-peak electricity to 'charge up' overnight and then release heat during the day, you'll need a different set of controls. Find out more about electric heating and hot water controls.
If your home is heated by a system of water-filled pipes and radiators running from a boiler, you have a 'wet' central heating system, whether it is gas, LPG or oil-fired. Your full set of controls should ideally include a boiler thermostat, a timer or programmer, a room thermostat and thermostatic radiator valves (TRVs).

    How much can you save?
    1. Fitting a new condensing boiler
      1. These are now 90% efficient
      2. Older boilers with cast iron heat exchanger are around 70%
      3. Typical savings against an older boiler with cast iron boiler 20%
      4. This equates to about £200 per year.
    2. Fitting thermostatic radiator valves (TRVs) to the radiators.

      1. These will ensure that each room is only as hot as you require.
      2. Give more control to each room so that bedrooms are cooler than e.g. living room.
      3. Estimated saving up to 10%
      4. This equates to about £150 per year
    3. Fitting new controls, programmer, room and hot water cylinder thermostats.
      1. Newer thermostats control the temperature to a finer degree ensuring a more even temperature.
      2. Even better is to fit a programmable thermostat, this means that you can program a different temperature at different times of the day.
      3. Saving up to 10% per year.
      4. This equates to around £150 per year
    4. Fit a hot water cylinder jacket.
      1. Estimated saving would save around 5%
      2. This equates to around £75 per year
    5. Turn down the thermostat by 1oC and save about 7%
      1. This equates to around £100 per year.
    Temperature controls

    Room thermostats
These prevent your home getting warmer than it needs to be: they will turn the heating on until the room reaches the temperature you have set, and then off until the temperature drops.
Room thermostats need a free flow of air to sense the temperature, so they must not be blocked by curtains or furniture, or put near heat sources.
Your room thermostat should be set to the lowest comfortable temperature - typically between 18°C and 21°C. Try turning your thermostat down a degree or two and seeing if you still feel comfortable. You don't need to turn your thermostat up when it is colder outside: the house will heat up to the set temperature whatever the weather. It may take a little longer on colder days, so you might want to set your heating to come on earlier in the winter.
A programmable room thermostat combines time and temperature controls and allows you to set different temperatures for different times of the day. You can have different temperatures in individual rooms by installing thermostatic radiator valves (TRVs) on individual radiators.

    Thermostatic radiator valves (TRVs)
Thermostatic radiator valves do not control the boiler: they just reduce the flow of water through the radiator they are fitted to when the temperature goes above a certain setting. Set them to the level you want for the room: a lower setting uses less energy and so will save you money.
Please note: We would not recommend using radiator covers because thermostatic radiator valves (TRVs) sense the air temperature around them and control the flow rate depending on what level they're set at. Having a cover over the radiator means that the TRV is enclosed, which is likely to make it think that the room temperature is higher than it actually is - because heat will be trapped between the radiator and the cover.
If you already have a radiator cover that cannot be removed, then it is still worth using TRVs to control the temperature as much as possible, although the radiator will be more effective at heating the room space without the cover. If you feel the radiator is not hot enough at a particular setting, turn up the TRV.

    Zone control
Save money by not overheating parts of your home that are unoccupied or need lower temperatures – bedrooms or rooms with lots of glazing, for example. You can have separate heating circuits with their own programmer and room thermostat (or programmable room thermostat) or set zones by using thermostatic radiator valves (TRVs).

    Cylinder thermostat
If your hot water is stored in a cylinder, the thermostat will prevent it being hotter than it needs to be. Once the water has reached the temperature you have set, the heat supply from the boiler will be turned off.
Turning the thermostat higher will not make the water heat up any faster, and the water heating will not come on if a time switch or programmer has switched it off.
Cylinder thermostats are usually fitted between one quarter and one third of the way up the cylinder. They have temperature scales marked: you should set them at between 60ºC and 65ºC. This is hot enough to kill off harmful bacteria in the water, but it s also hot enough to scald. For extra safety consider installing a thermostatic mixing valve which will automatically ensure that hot water is at a safe temperature.

    Boiler interlock
This is not a control but a system of wiring that turns the boiler off when neither the room thermostat nor the cylinder thermostat needs it. Without this the boiler can continue to 'cycle', wasting energy.

    Boiler thermostat
Your boiler will usually have a dial on it, marked in numbers or from Min to Max. This sets the temperature of the water that will be pumped from the boiler through the radiators to heat your home. The higher this is set, the quicker and more effectively the system will heat your home. In fact, if this is not set high enough, when it is very cold outside your home may not reach your desired temperature.
If you have a room thermostat and a boiler interlock, you can set the boiler thermostat quite high, letting the room controls do their job. But set it lower if there is anyone vulnerable in the household who might hurt themselves by coming into contact with very hot radiators or pipes.
Your boiler control thermostat should always be set to a higher temperature than the cylinder thermostat. In most boilers, a single boiler thermostat controls the temperature of water sent to both the cylinder and radiators, although in some they are separate.

    Timing controls

    Programmer or time control
This will automatically switch your heating off when you're not at home, or when you can do without it, such as when you're in bed.
Programmers allow you to set 'on' and 'off' time periods. Most models will let you set the central heating and domestic hot water to go on and off at different times. There may also be manual overrides. Check that the timer on the programmer is correct before you set your programmer. You may also need to adjust it when the clocks change.
Choose a cold evening and time how long it takes for your house to warm up from cold to a comfortable temperature – this is the warm-up time. Then turn the heating off completely and time how long it takes for the house to start to get uncomfortably cold – this is the cool-down time.
You can now set your timers including the warm up and cool down time. So, for example,  you can make sure that the  heating goes on with a warm-up time before you wake up and turns off before you leave the house. If you insulate your home, it will warm up more quickly and cool down more slowly, so you'll save money on heating.
If you insulate your home, it will warm up more quickly and cool down more slowly, so you'll save money on heating.
Set your water to heat up only when you need it: keeping it constantly hot uses energy. If your hot water cylinder or tank is well enough insulated, you may even find that the morning's hot water stays hot enough to use in the evenings.

    What we recommend
    • cylinder thermostats
    • full programmers
    • programmable room thermostats

12/02/2015: No Central Heating at Home in Hornchurch

On Thursday Sue rang us in the morning saying that her heating and hot water systems were not working due to low pressure in the system. Sue also said that there were water marks on the ceiling in the hall and home office. We were able to fit an appointment in at 4.00pm that afternoon.
After investigation it was agreed that the boiler failure and water damage were linked and that we needed to cut a hole in the office ceiling to observe where water was coming from. This revealed what was going on we could see that one of the central heating pipes was leaking from above. We then removed part of the bathroom unit to reveal pipework that had broken and needed to be replaced. We completed works and had the heating back up and running by 7.00pm just ready for valentines day.
We are gong to be returning this week to balance heating system and ensure repairs have been fully effective.

22/01/2015: Divine help for the Divine House

On Friday James phoned me to say that his heating was not getting hot enough and we found one of the two boilers heating the house was beyond economical repair. The boiler was over 15 years old so it was not surprising that it needed replacement. We took this boiler outs of service and temporally increased the heat output of the remaining Vaillant boiler. After agreeing with James to repace the boiler we have now removed the both the old boilers and installed an energy efficient Vaillant Eco Tec Plus 637. The presbytery in Elm Park will now be a lovely warm Divine environment.

    14/01/2015: New Boiler Dagenham

John and Lisa have a maintenance contract with British Gas covering their central heating, electrics and drains costing £50 per month (£600 a year). They called BG because their electricity consumer unit kept tripping. The issue was diagnosed to the boiler which was leaking on to the electrics. The Boiler was switched off by BG and they were told they would be contacted with a quote for a replacement boiler.
They are still waiting for this Boiler quote!!!!!!

Divine Water were contacted on Monday afternoon to quote for a replacement boiler.
We quoted that same afternoon and this was accepted.
We re-arranged some less urgent work and started installing a new Vaillant Eco ted 624 System Boiler on Tuesday and completed works on Wednesday, just in time to heat their home before the forecast cold snap this weekend.

10/01/2015: Green star Worcester Bosch 24i repair

We visited Marie today to investigate why the boiler was not getting as hot as it should and kept switching off. After cleaning all the manifold components and not finding much wrong we were a bit stuck as to what the issue could be. We decide to look at the main heat exchanger when taken out found that a part of the lower baffle had fallen off and was restricting the flue. We temporally replaced the part and it is now working ok. To make sure Its fixed we have ordered a new baffle. I'd never seen this fault before but all is working perfectly now.

    05/01/2015: Central Heating Repair Hornchurch

We visited Mrs Jones today to repair her boiler in Hornchurch. She had complained that the Vaillant boiler was continually coming on for short period then switching off. We found that the heat exchanger was blocked and the system required flushing out, at the same time we fitted a Gold central heating (Magna Clean Type) filter. This work cured the problem and the system is working and ready for Christmas. Just look at the picture of the filter to see what this collected in the first 2 hours of operation.

    05/11/2014: Boiler Replacement Brentwood

We visited a customer in Brentwood who complained that their carbon monoxide detector had gone off twice that day. We found that the boiler casing had rusted through allowing the products of combustion to entrée the house. This could have been fatal. The boiler was considered beyond repair and we have quoted for a replacement boiler. Unfortunately we had to cut off the gas supply due to the nature of the issue.

This could have been avoided by getting the boiler serviced regularly.

James accepted our quote for a new Vaillant Eco ted 630 boiler with new room thermostat, programmer, cylinder stat and thermostatic radiator valves.

    This is what James said.
Thanks Richard great service, great team. Highly recommended.

16/09/2014: Divine Water PHE Ltd pledges its support for Gas Safety Week

This fourth annual Gas Safety Week will see the whole industry coming together to bring gas safety to the forefront of people's minds. Dangerous gas work can kill, so it is vital that gas appliances are safety checked at least once a year. If left unchecked, poorly serviced gas appliances can cause gas leaks, fires, explosions and carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning. In the last year alone, 343 people were injured and 10 people died as a result of gas related incidents.

You can sign up to a free reminder service at www.StayGasSafe.co.uk, and use the interactive gas map to see how many unsafe gas appliances are lurking in an area.
During routine servicing, this year alone Divine Water has found 4 gas leaks and one carbon monoxide issue. In addition to these "Immediately Dangerous" Issues, we have found and corrected many "At Risk" issues. Be safe this winter, be gas safe.

Servicing, repairs and replacement of boiler and other gas appliances can help you to be Gas Safe.

Russell Krämer, chief executive for Gas Safe Register, said: "Every year, far too many people suffer from preventable gas related accidents, such as gas leaks, explosions, fires and carbon monoxide poisoning. It's great therefore, that Divine Water has pledged its support and is raising awareness of gas safety issues, helping to let the 23 million gas consumers in the UK know about the simple checks they can make to stay safe."

Follow these simple checks to stay gas safe:

    • Always use a Gas Safe registered engineer when having gas work carried out in your home. You can find a registered engineer in your area by calling Gas Safe Register on 0800 408 5500 or visit www.GasSafeRegister.co.uk
    • Get your gas appliances safety checked at least once a year and serviced in line with the manufacturer's instructions. This includes your gas boiler, gas cooker and gas fire. Sign up at www.staygassafe.co.uk for a free reminder service.
    • Check the front and back of your engineer's Gas Safe Register ID card, making sure they are qualified to do the specific type of gas work you require.
    • Install an audible carbon monoxide alarm which will alert you if dangerous levels are present in your home.
    • Check for warning signs your appliances aren't working correctly, such as lazy yellow or orange flames instead of crisp blue ones, black marks on or around the appliance and too much condensation in the room.

For more information or to find Gas Safe registered engineer visit www.GasSafeRegister.co.uk or call 0800 408 5500.

16/06/2014: Summer's here! Time to think about your central heating boiler

During the summer months and before the weather starts to get colder the last thing on your mind is your boiler and central heating system. However, prolonged sessions of non or little use can cause issues when the wintery months set in. So Divine Water has given some guidelines to follow to make sure your boiler will be ready when called upon.

It’s advised by the Gas Safe Register and the Energy Saving Trust to have your gas fired boiler serviced annually to maintain its working efficiently and to be in keeping with some warranty guidelines.

Firstly, ensure that you’re using you heating controls correctly. Review you boiler thermostat, cylinder thermostat, time programmer and thermostatic radiator valve settings and re-set them to match your needs more closely in terms of timing and comfort.

And before the weather gets colder ensure that radiators will work when required by turning up the thermostat and making sure all radiators are heating up. This will exercise all the central heating valves and ensure they are ready to work in the autumn months.

You can also use the summer months to fit Thermostatic radiator valves or reflective insulated panel boards on the wall behind your radiators, especially if the radiator is mounted on an outside wall. Rigid reflective radiator panels are an ideal solution if you don’t want to take your radiators off the walls. And ensure that, like in the winter months, no furniture or curtains are blocking the radiators.

The best advice is to get the boiler serviced during the hotter months – not just because you’ll be able to get an engineer more readily but also to identify any issues before you become reliant on your boiler and hot water system in the months when you need them most. Divine Water can provide a boiler service and will cost around £55.

If your boiler is over ten years old then you may consider replacing it with a new, energy efficient, condensing model. Older boilers may convert as little as 60 per cent of the gas they use into useful heat so it’s worth considering a more efficient replacement to reduce the cost of your bills.

15/03/2014: Bacon Butties and Boost for Business

More than 40 Havering business people tucked into bacon butties and got a boost for their business when Havering Council Trading Standards held a Buy with Confidence breakfast meeting this week. The event was held at The Queen's Theatre, Hornchurch and was part of Havering Enterprise Week.

Buy with Confidence is Havering Council's approved trader scheme which gives local residents a choice of traders who have been vetted by Trading Standards. It also gives local traders a chance to promote themselves as Trading Standards Approved to help them stand out from their competitors and give their customers confidence in their business.

Havering Council Cabinet Member for Public Protection, Councillor Lesley Kelly, said: "Buy with Confidence is an excellent scheme which helps businesses demonstrate to customers that they work to high standards. This breakfast event explained to local entrepreneurs how they can register under the scheme and the benefits that will bring.

"It was particularly interesting to hear that being Buy with Confidence scheme members helped two local firms, Surevent and Divine Water, win their categories in the Havering Business Awards."

Kerry Jones of Romford-based Surevent, said: "Buy with Confidence has been good for our family-run business as it opened doors and helped us win new contracts. A major builder was looking for a specialist firm to deal with a condensation problem in some properties and when he saw the logo on our website it gave him confidence to give us the work because he knew we had already met very stringent standards. That contract has led to several others.

"The Buy with Confidence scheme also helped us win our category in last year's Havering Business Awards as we could show the standards we set ourselves to meet our customers' needs."

Richard Cossey of Hornchurch-based Divine Water Plumbing, Heating and Electrical Ltd, said: "Buy with confidence has given Divine Water an additional level of approval which helps us quickly build confidence with customers when they are choosing someone to work with. Membership of the scheme has helped to win lots of new business together with a forum to discuss issues with other quality companies in the scheme. Also entering the Havering Business Awards made Divine Water revisit our business plan and improve the plan and track its implementation. It helped us focus on key issues that would drive new business and improve profitability. As a two-time winner of the small business section of the awards we have secured business as a direct result of publicity of the event and results."

10/01/2014: Asbestos Awareness training for greater safety

Richard Cossey has recently successfully completed a course in Asbestos Awareness, complying with Regulation 10 of the Control of Asbestos Regulations, 2012. The course is aimed at tradespeople who may work in buildings where asbestos containing materials (ACMs) may be present. It encompasses training on the awareness of the properties of asbestos, where it has been used in buildings and when it may present a risk to themselves and those around them. This helps all concerned to protect themselves and the occupants of buildings where they are working from the risk of exposure to airborne asbestos fibres. The health and safety rules of the asbestos legislation are strict and specific, this course helps to make sure that they are observed wherever there may be a risk of disturbing existing asbestos oontaining materials in the course of carrying out work.

If your boiler is over ten years old then you may consider replacing it with a new, energy efficient, condensing model. Older boilers may convert as little as 60 per cent of the gas they use into useful heat so it's worth considering a more efficient replacement to reduce the cost of your bills.

    03/12/2012: New qualification for Joe
This week we heard that Joe has passed his Water Byelaws Regulations Certificate. Having successfully completed the course and examination at Havering College, Joe is now qualified to ensure that water systems satisfy the regulations.

The Water Fittings Regulations (or Byelaws in Scotland) are national requirements for the design, installation and maintenance of plumbing systems, water fittings and water-using appliances. Their purpose is to prevent misuse, waste, undue consumption or erroneous measurement of water and, most importantly, to prevent contamination of drinking water. They replace the former Water Supply Byelaws which each water supplier has administered for similar purposes for many years.

Owners and occupiers of premises and anyone who installs plumbing systems or water fittings have the legal duty to nake sure that their water system satsifies the regulations. Advanced notice must be given of proposed installations in most cases, so architects, building developers and plumbers have to follow the regulations on behalf of future owners or occupiers.

If you own or occupy premises, or are just about to, for your own peace of mind, you can call us on 01708 441433, or click in the header of any page to email us for information.
